Reducing bathroom water use

Norcros Plc

Water use in the home is under increasing scrutiny as households look for ways to manage utility costs and reduce unnecessary consumption. The bathroom is one of the largest contributors to domestic water use, which makes it a natural starting point for improving efficiency.

One of the most effective changes is choosing showers instead of baths. Filling a bath requires a large volume of water, whereas a shower typically uses far less. Shortening the length of time spent in the shower can further reduce consumption.

For households that prefer baths, reducing the amount of water used can still make a difference. Filling the bath only part of the way instead of to the top lowers the total volume used. Placing the plug in before the bath begins filling allows the temperature to be adjusted as the tub fills, rather than letting water run until the correct temperature is reached before sealing the drain.

Shower fixtures also influence water consumption. Water saving shower heads are designed to limit the volume of water flowing through the fixture while maintaining a comfortable shower experience. They are typically quick to install and can provide an immediate improvement in efficiency. In some cases it is worth checking compatibility with the existing plumbing system, particularly if the home has lower water pressure or uses an electric shower.

The sink is another place where water is frequently wasted through everyday routines. Leaving the tap running while brushing teeth or shaving can use more water than necessary. Turning the tap off during these activities, or filling the basin with a small amount of water for rinsing, can reduce this waste.
