Drax strengthens biomass supply chain with new lower-emission vessel

Drax Group plc

Drax has received the first UK delivery from the M.V. Ultra Yorkshire, a biomass carrier developed with Ultrabulk to support its fuel supply chain and reduce shipping emissions.

The vessel arrived at the Port of Liverpool after travelling from Baton Rouge with more than 29,000 tonnes of biomass pellets for Drax Power Station in North Yorkshire. The cargo supports Drax’s biomass generation operations, which remain important to the UK power system and to the company’s earnings base.

The voyage used B100 biofuel rather than conventional marine fuel. Drax estimates this reduced carbon dioxide emissions from the journey by around 90%. Drax is trying to make its biomass supply chain more secure, more efficient and better aligned with future emissions requirements.

The arrival also follows an extension of Drax’s agreement with Ultrabulk to March 2031. The contract includes steps to cut shipping emissions over time. That matters because transport is a key part of the biomass model, and lower-emission logistics may help reduce future regulatory and reputational risk.

Reliable pellet deliveries are central to Drax’s generation output. The company said Drax Power Station supplied around 5% of UK electricity in 2025 from biomass. The Ultra Yorkshire adds another dedicated logistics asset to support that supply chain.

Drax Group plc (LON:DRX), trading as Drax, is a power generation business. The principal downstream enterprises are based in the UK and include Drax Power Limited, which runs the biomass fuelled Drax power station, near Selby in North Yorkshire.
