Tidal energy projects depend on cables that must operate in difficult seabed conditions. At MeyGen, strong tidal flows and rocky seabed areas create the potential for cable movement, abrasion and vibration. These are not small technical details.

Indeximate used Distributed Acoustic Sensing to monitor MeyGen’s subsea cables over roughly two years. The system turned fibre-optic data into a clearer picture of how the cables were behaving across daily, monthly and seasonal tidal cycles. This helped the operator see which locations were showing repeated movement risk, rather than relying only on one-off inspections.

The analysis identified specific areas where cable movement risk was highest. MeyGen then acted on that evidence by installing 12 four-tonne rock bags at the end of summer 2025 to stabilise the cable in targeted locations. Indeximate’s real-time event detection also helped confirm that the rock bags were placed where they were needed.

Several monitored points showed a significant reduction in cable movement risk after the intervention, and one previously high-risk area was no longer flagged as a risk location.
