Wave and tidal energy are now a real option for the grid

Tidal and wave power are beginning to attract serious investor attention because they solve a problem that solar and wind cannot: they deliver clean electricity on a predictable schedule. As grids become more reliant on renewables, the weakness of intermittent supply is becoming more obvious. Solar does not generate at night. Wind can drop without warning. Batteries are expensive and not yet deployed at scale. Tidal and wave systems offer a consistent alternative.

Tidal energy uses the natural rise and fall of the sea, driven by the moon’s gravity, to turn underwater turbines or push water through barrages. The timing of the tides is fixed and can be forecast years in advance. This makes tidal energy uniquely reliable among renewables. Wave energy, powered by surface motion from ocean winds, is slightly less predictable but still more stable than wind or solar.

Global forecasts expect the tidal and wave energy market to approach 2 billion US dollars in value by 2032.
